Free check

Which analytics does this site use, and does it need consent?

This free check opens a page in a real browser, lists the analytics tools it loads, such as Google Analytics, Matomo, Plausible or Satsu, and says whether each one typically needs a consent banner, with no signup and nothing stored.

What the visitors row looks at

The row looks at the requests the page makes and matches them against a list of known analytics services. For each one found it reports a plain verdict on consent, and the row's wording follows the most demanding tool on the page.

  • Needs a consent banner: tools such as Google Analytics
  • Needs a banner unless configured cookieless: tools such as Matomo
  • Cookieless, no banner needed for analytics: tools such as Plausible
  • Already on Satsu: no banner needed
  • No analytics found at all

Why it matters

Analytics is the most common reason a site needs a cookie banner at all. A tool that stores a persistent identifier in the browser, or sends visitor data to a third party for its own use, generally needs the visitor's consent first. A cookieless tool that derives no persistent visitor ID can avoid that. Knowing which kind of tool your page loads, including tools added by a plugin or a tag manager that nobody remembers, is the first step in deciding whether the banner is necessary.

What a fix usually looks like

The verdict points to one of three outcomes.

  • Keep the tool, and load it only after the visitor has agreed
  • Configure the tool to run without cookies, if it supports that
  • Switch to cookieless analytics, which needs no banner for analytics and gives you counts without tracking individuals
  • If no tool was found, add one so you can see your visitors at all

What this check does not do

It detects tools by the requests the page makes on load. A tool that only loads after a click, or one that is proxied through your own domain under a different name, may not be recognised. The consent verdict is a general statement about each tool and not legal advice for your site.

Frequently asked questions

Does cookieless analytics need a consent banner?

Tools that set no cookie and keep no persistent visitor ID typically need no banner for analytics. The check labels each detected tool accordingly, and your lawyer has the final word.

Why does the check say Matomo needs a banner unless configured?

Matomo can run with or without cookies depending on its setup, and the page alone does not show which. The check says so instead of guessing.

What if no analytics tool is found?

Then none loaded on arrival. The row shows a warning because you cannot see your visitors, and suggests adding a cookieless tool.
